NASA SL 2015 NATIONAL ALTITUDE CHAMPIONS
The teams took advantage of the beautiful November weather for their first TARC launch of this school year. We had some beautiful flights!
Yes, we are the Spring Grove ROCKETS! 2021 will be a challenging year to get a whole team photograph. The team is now working on the preliminary design review. We have a unique payload that ties into educational engagement! More on that later!
After successfully completing project Artemis for NASA SLI 2020, the team returned to school eager to represent Spring Grove on the National stage yet again. The proposal was written and we learned this morning that we have been selected to participate in NASA SLI 2021! Stay tuned to updates as we work through the program.
This was the second TARC launch where teams were closer enough to the target altitude and flight time. We had several good scores including a .92. Three more weeks of TARC flights for us since we have NASA SLI starting March 30.
This is the initial flight of the deploy-able payload rocket for Battle of the Rocket. At apogee, the payload is ejected with a parachute and the nose cone with its own chute. The rest of the booster has a Jolly Logic chute release and the parachute opens at 500ft. Great flight on a nice still day on its maiden voyage. Will fly again in March.
The weather cooperated this weekend and 9 teams launched this weekend as they try to narrow in on the TARC 2020 launch requirements of 800ft, 40-43s of flight time and one large chicken egg. Teams will work on building more rockets this week!
Spring Grove's NASA SLI team successfully completed their static ground testing of their ejection charges for the rocket Apophis.

The Spring Grove TARC teams launched yesterday and the results were great. With a target altitude of 800ft, there were flights of 786ft, 792ft, 798ft, 801ft and 819ft. Many other flights were close as well. The teams are getting closer to qualifying flights for TARC Nationals! Go Rocket Scientists!
The rocketry team just started their spring R&K Sub sale. Orders are Feb 17 and will be delivered to the high school on Feb 27. Team members are now taking orders. Payment may be made by cash or check payable to SGASD. Please see files below for order forms.
Most of the teams flew for the first time on Jan 13 in the surprising 50 degree and still weather. The launches looked good with some near perfect on the altitude or time. No back to building and tweaking for the next launch.
The 18 pound rocket flew on a CTI J380 Smokey Sam motor on Saturday for proof of concept. The flight was straight and the deployment of the drogue and main parachutes went according to plan. The rocket landed with no damage. The motor was smaller than the planned motor due to the wind to cut down on drift.
On Saturday Jan 11, the Spring Grove NASA SLI team prepped their full scale rocket, Apophis, for its first flight at MDRA. The rocket is roughly 20 pounds. Launch photos and videos posted this week.
The fin can for our full scale rocket for NASA SLI includes a 3D printed fin can to slide over the motor tube. We would like to thank our sponsor TE Connectivity for printing our part out of Ultem. The part was student designed using Solidworks. The first full scale launch is scheduled for this weekend.
