Spring Grove teams are 3D printing or (additive manufacturing) their own nose cones for #TARC2017.  The nose cones have variable mass depending on the wall thickness.  So far they have been printed between 25g and 65g.  They can also be printed in varying colors and materials.  The ones below are both being printed from PLA and the ones on the left are glow-in-the-dark.

We shared the video on Friday of the camera on the rocket mounted upward, now the one facing downward.  It is very interesting to see the launch site, spectators, ez-ups, and farms as this rocket soared to a height of 3972ft.

Remember that Paint Night is tonight at Spring Grove Area High School cafeteria starting at 6pm.

On-board launch video

Below is a video from an on-board camera from our recent launch of a rocket that was 17.5lb and roughly 7.5ft long.  The rocket reached a height of 3792ft and landed safely.  The video was edited for length, so you get to see boost, parachute ejection and landing.  There is sound, so that is very cool!

Launch photos from MDRA

On October 16, SLI team members traveled to the Maryland Delaware Rocketry Association (MDRA) launch in Centreville, MD.  The team launched the 2016 SLI rocket to get experience with rocket components, launch preparation and recovery.  The flight went well and the rocket was safely recovered.  We want to thank everyone at MDRA for making us feel welcome and supporting us through the years.  Here are some photos from the launch while I am still working on editing the on-board video footage.

Spring Grove team to test the effect of acceleration on a colloid for NASA Project.

10/17/2016

A colloid is a substance that has both the properties of a solid and a liquid.  The 2017 NASA Student Launch Initiative (SLI) team from Spring Grove will test the effect of the acceleration of the launch of a rocket has on a colloid.  The experiment will try to determine if it acts as a solid or a liquid under those conditions.   The rocket will be designed and built by the team during this school year and will launch in Huntsville, AL in April of 2017.  The rocket will carry the scientific payload to a height of one mile and return unharmed.
