The video below was taken by a camera attached to the body tube between the fins.  We 3D print a holder for the HD video camera and it takes amazing video.

First launch of Mars Rover rocket

The Mars Rover rocket for the Battle of the Rockets competition successfully launched on Sunday February 17 at the MDRA lsunch in Price, MD.  The rocket reached a height of 1138ft, which is well over the required 1000ft altitude.

York College of Pennsylvania successfully flies full scale NASA rocket!

York College of Pennsylvania successfully launched its full scale rocket for the NASA University Student Launch Initiative (USLI) competition.  This is the first team that York College has ever entered into this program and is competing against some of the most prestegious universities in the country like the Naval Academy, MIT, Cornell, North Eastern, North Western and Penn State. Crongratulations team on trailblazing your way through the USLI challenge this year!

The Rover Rocket successfully launched on Sunday at Maryland Delaware Rocketry Association (MDRA) launch in Price, MD.  The video below documents the preparation, flight and results of the deplyment.  The small object on the orange parachute near the end of the video is the deplyed payload.  The rocket is 11.4in in diameter, 12ft long and on the pad weighed 55lbs.  The rocket reached a height of 1138ft.

Glow in the Dark rocket keychains are printed for fundraiser

The team will be conducting several fundraisers this spring to support the program.  A couple grants/sponsors did not come through this winter, so we will be conducting several fundraisers to support the program.  These glow in the dark rocket keychains are only $1.  We also have mission patches and remove before flight keychains for $2 each

On March 14, we will hold the spring Paint Night at the high school starting at 6pm.  For only $40, you can paint a beautiful spring scene on wood.  Registration form below.  You are able to mail in the registration with a check made payable to SGASD or if you would like to pay by Paypal, just click on the "support our rocket scientists" blue button to the right and follow the Paypal link.

Mars Rover Rocket prepared for launch

The Mars Rover Rocket will be launched this weekend in Price, MD in preparation for the Battle of the Rockets Competition.  The 12in diameter, 12' long and 50lb rocket will fly on a CTI K1440 motor to a height of close to 1200 ft before deploying the 6ft Iris Ultra drogue parachute.

Last night the Battle of the Rockets team presented at the STEAM evning at Indian Rock Elementary school.  The students loved seeing the launch videos and the large rockets.

Critical Design Review (CDR) successfully completed!

Both Battle of the Rockets teams successfully completed their oral critical design review (CDR).  In the CDR, the teams must fully outline their designs, timeline, budget, work completed, and all other aspects of the project to successfully meet the requirements.  The CDR is presented in a 30min long oral video conference with two reviewers who score the review based on a rubric.  The photo on the left is the sounding rocket team and the photo on the right is  the Mars Rover rocket team.  Next steps are fundraising and flight tests. Go rocket scientists!

At the last two basketball games, we have set up a table to sell keychains, mission patches and accept donations for our Rocketry Team.  A big thank you to all who have contributed to our cause.  We appreciate it very much!

Main Parachute Ejection test

Here is the main parachute ejection test.  The foam piece that you see coming out is a sabot that will contain the Mars rover that will be ejected when the main parachute is ejected at 600ft.

These are always fun to watch.  This is a video filmed at 240fps of the drogue parachute ejection test for the Rover Rocket.  The rocket was attached to a zipline for the halves to be able to slide away from each other after the ejection.  A great way to end the week.
