A rainbow just in time for the awards ceremony. In the middle, R2G2 from Notre Dame Academy wins the oral presentation competition. On the end, Odle Middle School Space Potatoes from Washington State takes first place overall.

Spring Grove team two listens to altitude on field.

After the rocket was found, the team huddled around it to listen to the altitude. The altimeter beeps and you are able to count them for each digit of the height. Team two's first flight was 837ft. The picture of the score board shows both Spring Grove scores after the first flight. A red dot means top 24 and the ability to launch again (the first round of second flights). The green dot is for teams 25 through 42 and the ability to launch again (the second round of second flights). The second round was canceled due to a storm, so the top 24 teams were the only ones able to fly a second time.

Spring Grove's second team to launch for the day was the team that had a record 6pts qualifying score. There launch was 837ft and roughly 4 seconds short on time earning them a score of 29pts. Teams 26-42nd were to get a second launch, but their launch window was scrubbed due to the storm that came through.

The weather did not permit a second flight, even though they qualified for one. They could have really moved up in the standings with many teams struggling with their second flight.

Here is a slow motion video for Gavin's team's first flight of the day Saturday in the wind. The flight was 852ft which was only 2ft from the target altitude of 800ft. Due to the wind, the rocket took longer fall than planned resulting in a final score of 17.44pts. The team was in 21st place after the first round out of 101 teams.

Spring Grove team places 11th in TARC Nationals!

With a score of a 17.44, the team was in 21st place and qualified for a second launch. During the second launch, the team earned a score of 24 points. Their combined score placed them in 11th place out of the 101 teams at TARC Nationals Saturday. Only two points shy of the top ten. Congratulations team!

After roughly 2 dozen practice flights over the past 3 weeks, the teams are both ready for TARC Nationals this Saturday. With scores of less than 10 consistently, they feel prepared for the big day. There is only so much you can do to get ready, then the luck factor comes in. Wind, updrafts, rain, variations in the reload and delay, all play a part in the final launch. Good luck teams, we know that you can do it. #RocketPride

The unsettled weather continues, but we are getting ready for the National Flyoff in The Plains, VA. The teams will leave tomorrow evening and spend the day in Washington DC Friday. Launch day is scheduled for Saturday May 14. The launches will go on as schedule unless, there is heavy rain, over 20mph wind or lightning. If the day has to be postponed, launches will be on Sunday.

The teams each have three rockets ready as soon as the weather breaks. The National Fly-off is in The Plains, VA on May 14. Launches will start around 8am and continue until at least 3 or 4pm with at least 150 launches scheduled. The Fly-off will be at The Great Meadow, an equestrian facility that has donated their land for the competition each year. Spring Grove's launch times have been set between 9:15-10am and 11-11:45am. Each team will get one launch and if they are in the best 40 after every team flies once, they will each get a second flight.
