8th grade TARC team launch

The rocket above is from our 7th grade team last year who in their first year of TARC advanced to TARC Nationals.  The flight was very good.  We were glad to get flying again, since we have been shut down for several months with rain, mud and wind during 2018 which for us was the second wettest year on record.

Earlier we posted a slow motion, up-close launch video of this rocket.  The rocket is 12in in diameter, 13ft long and over 50lbs.  The rocket flew on a CTI K1440 motor to a height of just over 1000ft.  It successfully completed a dual deployment with a drogue and main parachute.

Successful tube launch rocket.

The launch above was from an 8ft long tube that is 4in in diameter.  The 6 fin rocket is centered in the tube by a sabot in the front.  The sabot cleared and fell away perfectly allowing a perfectly straight flight. The rocket was powered by an F79 Smoky Sam motor from CTI.  Beautiful flight!

Battle of the Rockets update

1/17/2019

On Saturday, the Battle of the Rockets teams successfully flew their Sounding and Altitude rockets in order to get data for their Critical Design Review (CDR) that is due at the end of this month.  The rockets performed well and all were close to their predicted altitudes.  We have some adjustments to make and additional work to do on the Sounding Rocket.  All-in-all, we are on track to defend our title at the Battle of the Rockets at the end of March.

The rocket was 12 inches in diameter and just over 50 pounds.  It was a scratch built rocket with fiberglass fins.  Flying on a CTI K1440, the rocket reached a height of over 1000ft and landed successfully. The launch video is filmed at 240fps and the descent under parachute is sped up to close to the actual speed of the falling rocket.

The Spring Grove Battle of the Rockets team traveled to the MDRA launch this weekend.  We had many great flights, but this was one of my favorites.  The rocket was launched from a tube.  It was an 8 ft long tube that allowed the rocket to get to a stable velocity before exiting.  In the picture on the right, you see both halves of the sabot falling away at the 6 fin rocket travels perfectly straight!

York College launches NASA USLI sub-scale rocket

1/9/2019

It has been some time since there last was an update.  The big reason has been the rain. Launches in Ocober, November, and December were canceled due to rain and field conditions.  Sunday was the first time since the beginning of the school year that we were able to launch a high powered rocket.  The York College NASA USLI team successfully launched their subscale rocket on a CTI K780 motor to a height of 5600ft in clear blue skies.  The Spring Grove Battle of the Rockets teams are planning a launch this weekend, so updates may come more frequently.
