Rocket Launch at Windy Hill Senior Center

After a couple hours of building, we took the rockets outside to launch them.  Most were very straight launches, some had parachute deployment issues, but everyone had a great time.  Surprisingly, 10 out of 11 of the new Estes starters fired.  It was a good day.

Rocket Building Workshop at Windy Hill Senior Center

9/27/2017

Members of the SLI team had the pleasure of working with seniors yesterday to build and launch a rocket.  The scratch built kits were designed by the team.  Everyone had a great time during the building process and later in the morning, the rockets were launched.  Hopefully we will have a strong fundraising season in order to purchase parts and offer the workshop again in the spring.  If you would like to make a donation to support this program, please click on the blue box at the right to be directed to our Paypal link.

The executioner flies on last time.

Last year, we showed you the launch of the first CO2 powered ejection system rocket that we have flown built by our aerospace engineering class.  This month it might have flow for the last time.  There was a perfect ascent and two rounds of ejection charges,  While the parachute came out, it got tangled in the parachute pouch and the rocket took a hard hit on landing.  Probably will not save this one.

These videos are filmed at 240fps.  I love the detail of the high speed video.  Sometimes I will also post videos shot at 480fps, but quality decreases with speed.

TARC 2017 flight with attitude!

This month we took at TARC 2017 Nationals rocket and flew it with a Cesaroni F240 Vmax motor!  While it still has nearly the same impulse, it was pulling over 50G coming off the pad!  Now that is some serious attitude.  This tis the 4th time this rocket has flown with this motor.  All perfect flights and all without damage,  We would love to fly these motors in TARC!

Motor failure on level 1 attempt

While there will be more photos and videos next week, This one was very interesting and I saved it for Friday.  The rocket separated on the pad and video plays slow enough that you can see the motor still on the blast shield after the rocket lifts up.  Near the end of the video, the motor casing and reload fall to the ground.  No forward closure on the casing, delay element drilled out completely, seal failure, you be the judge.

Below the video are photos of the rockets that were taken at MDRA and might be featured in a video next week.

The 2018 NASA SLI team is hard at work on their proposal that is due next week.  The team also had their first launch of the year this past weekend.  New team members learned a lot about preping a rocket for launch and rocket recovery.  The team successully launched 4 rockets including the NASA SLI 2016 full scale rocket from team Darwin and the NASA SLI 2017 subscale rocket from team Triton.
