Rocket building workshop

4/26/2017

The most recent educational engagement activity was a rocket building workshop for intermediate school students.  12 students built rockets after school yesterday under the direction of the SLI team members.  Unfortunately, due to the weather, we were not able to launch them.  Next week there are two more sessions with an additional 20 students.

As TARC Nationals draws near, we are going to shift updates from SLI to TARC.

On-board video from the Huntsville launch

The video below was taken by a Mobius HD camera on the side of the body tube in a 3D printed mount.  The video shows that there was no vibration in either of the 2 3D printed fins visible in the video.  The rocket reached an altitude of 4492ft.  The video starts with the 5 second count down and ends on the ground.  I cut out the dizzying spinning of most of the descent.

The US Space and Rocket Center is an amazing place to see artifacts from space travel history.  It has the only full scale shuttle with fuel tank and solid rocket boosters, the capsule from Apolo 16, the containment trailer from Apolo 12 and many other items including a full Saturn V rocket!

The rocket fair was an opportunity for all teams to display their rockets and payloads.  They also get a chance to talk to various other team members about their project, the rocket, the payload and their experiences.

The SLI team today traveled to a farm north of Huntsville to launch with 59 other high schools and universities.  The launch was perfectly straight and both parachutes deployed successfully.  We retrieved the rocket from the field undamaged.  The altitude was 4492ft.  The video below shows today's launch.  Stop back daily for additional photos and launch videos.
